You cannot go very far on Lanzarote without encountering the art of Manrique. A giant juguete del viento stands on the roundabout at the airport exit, and at least seventeen more are dotted around the island.
.
It is said that, on returning from a visit to the USA, Manrique was so appalled by the sight of the twelve-storey Gran Hotel Arrecife that he decided that there must be a better way to manage development for tourism. A pioneer of sustainability, he campaigned fairly successfully, for hotel buildings to be no taller than a palm tree. He also created Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism to balance the increasing demands of tourism with the protection of the natural environment. I have chosen what I consider to be the best five of these sites, though others may not agree. Click on the markers on the map for more information about each one.
